When it comes to fashion, Nigerians are exceptional in their outstanding creativity and inventiveness, the question is why then are we still placing higher value on imports from Dubai and Asia when we can do better?
Because knowledge is power!
A lack of formal fashion training facilities has limited progress and sophistication of the fashion industry, from pattern cutting and styling, to marketing and PR. The poor infrastructure does not help matters as it slows down production and raises costs there by making importation of second hand products a more attractive and viable option.
What is most unfortunate is the fact that Nigeria’s textiles market was once the third largest in Africa. The fashion industry if functional can drastically reduce the level of unemployment.
A Veteran fashion promoter Lexy Mojo-Eyes once said “The fashion industry can become a big business in Africa. It could contribute to the development of industrial fabric, infrastructures and even more with the support of governments. Fashion can create jobs.”
It is on this note that Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria project has included Fabrics, textile, processing and producing technology in its courses for this year's program. Find out more on learnnigeria.org
